16 April 2026 — The American project.
The American project is failing. I do not say this with joy and I do not say it with surprise. I say it because it is true and because saying it plain is the only honest thing left.
Trump did not make the crack. He found it and he broke it open. When he goes another will come. The soil that grew him is still there and it is rich and it is waiting. The men who will follow him have watched and learned and they will be smarter and colder and more patient.
The founders wrote liberty and kept slaves. They wrote equal and meant white and male and landed. The country has torn before. Civil war. Jim Crow. The Depression. Vietnam. Each time people said it was finished and each time it was not. Not quite. The stitching held.
This tear runs deeper. The lies move faster than the truth can catch them. The Republicans will not stop Trump and they will not stop the next one. The Supreme Court bends to him. The press grows tired. The young vote less and trust less and believe less. The institutions that were built to hold the line are holding nothing.
Can it be put back together. Maybe. But not by one election and not by wishing. It takes decades and it takes people who will do the slow patient work of making a country again. I do not know if that work is being done. I know it must be done. The clock runs.
