Marx opened the Manifesto with a line everyone knows. A spectre is haunting Europe.
Then he did something quieter. He named the powers joined against him. Pope and Czar.
Metternich and Guizot. French Radicals and German police-spies. He did not say the forces of reaction. He named them.
Then he noticed a thing. The word Communist was already a smear in 1848. Opponents in power used it against every opposition party in Europe. The word did the work before the idea did.
Marx's answer was plain. Publish openly. State what we believe. Meet the nursery tale with a manifesto.
The word has changed. The move has not. Every opposition gets a word thrown at it. Woke. Socialist. Fascist. The word does the work before the idea does.
The only answer is the one Marx gave. Say what you believe plainly and let the reader sort it.
